Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations collapsed in a week. What a source shock looks like in your data
Tracker data shows Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations falling from 3.8% to 0.5% in August 2026. How to read a source shock and set alerts for the next one.

The short answer
In Promptwatch data published by Semrush, Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell from 3.8% (18 July to 7 August 2026) to 0.5% (14 to 17 August), an 86% drop. The tracker calls the size provisional. For brands, the lesson is to watch the mix of cited domains per engine, not only whether you appear.
Key takeaways
- In Promptwatch data reported by Semrush, Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell from 3.8% in 18 July to 7 August 2026 to 0.5% in 14 to 17 August.
- Promptwatch called the size of the drop provisional and did not rule out a problem in its own data collection.
- In the same tracker, Reddit citations in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode fell by far less, so the shock was concentrated in one engine.
- Otterly, which also sells AI-search monitoring, saw official pages and reference sources take the space Reddit left in ChatGPT answers.
- A source-mix alert per engine catches a shock like this within a week; a single blended visibility score hides it.

What the tracker saw
Reddit almost disappeared from ChatGPT's citations in mid-August. Semrush, reporting data from the AI visibility tracker Promptwatch, says Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell from 3.8% between 18 July and 7 August 2026 to 0.5% between 14 and 17 August, a decline of 86%.1 The fall started on 8 August and steepened on 14 August, with no explanation from the engine.
Semrush sells search and AI visibility software, and Promptwatch sells tracking, so both have a stake in the story being noticed. Their caveat deserves equal weight. Promptwatch described the size of the drop as provisional and said it could not rule out a problem in its own data collection.1 OpenAI told Semrush that it does not set a fixed level of visibility for individual sites and that ChatGPT still cites Reddit.
Our view: treat the direction as solid and the exact size as open. Four days of post-drop data is a short window for a figure that will be quoted for months.
One engine moved, the others did not
The drop was concentrated in ChatGPT. In the same Promptwatch data, Reddit citations in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode fell over the same period by 11% and 31%, far less than in ChatGPT.1
How far Reddit citations fell, by engine
Otterly, which also sells AI-search monitoring, reached the same shape from its own panel of brand reports in August. It found that ChatGPT cut Reddit citations sharply while the other engines it tracks kept citing the same threads.2 Otterly read that as a change in how ChatGPT selects sources rather than anything Reddit did to its own content. We have not verified Otterly's figures, so we describe its finding without them.
Two independent trackers agreeing on direction is the most useful part of this story. Either one alone could be a collection fault.
What filled the gap
Semrush's piece does not say which domains gained. Otterly does, in general terms: official brand pages, encyclopedia and reference sources, and government and charity documents took the citations that forum threads used to win in ChatGPT answers.2
That fits the wider pattern. Across eight engines, Profound found that company-owned sites drew 57% of citations between 16 April and 16 July 2026, before this shock.3 First-party pages were already the largest source. A ChatGPT that leans less on forums leans even more on them.
It also explains why the Reddit playbooks of last year aged so quickly. In Semrush's weekly snapshots from 14 July to 12 October 2025, Reddit and Wikipedia were ChatGPT's two most-cited domains.4 Our review of schema, llms.txt and Reddit made the case that one engine's habits are a weak guide to the next year. This week is that point in action.
What a source shock looks like in your own data
A source shock shows up first in the domain mix behind answers, then in your mentions. If your brand was mentioned in ChatGPT mainly through Reddit threads, three things change at once.
- Citations fall before mentions. The engine may still name you, but the cited link now points to a review site, a directory or your own page.
- Engines diverge. Your ChatGPT numbers move while Google AI Mode and Perplexity stay flat, so a blended score drifts by a smaller amount and looks like noise.
- Competitors swap places. A rival with strong official pages and reference entries gains share without doing anything new.
Our view: report citations per engine and per source type, never only as one score. Our guide to setting a brand-site citation target per engine explains why the targets differ, and this drop shows how fast they can move.
How do you set an alert for the next source shock?
A source-mix alert needs a fixed prompt set, a weekly run and a simple rule. You do not need a new tool to start; you need the cited URLs from every run kept, not only the yes or no of a mention.
A weekly source-mix alert
- Freeze the prompt set
The same buyer prompts every week, so changes come from the engine, not from you.
- Store every cited URL
Group them by domain and by type: your site, competitors, forums, reviews, reference, press.
- Compare per engine
Each source type's share this week against its four-week average, engine by engine.
- Flag a large swing
Alert when a source type's share halves or doubles on one engine and holds for two runs.
- Check before acting
Re-run a sample by hand, and read what other trackers report, before changing your plan.
The last step matters most this month. Promptwatch itself flagged a possible collection problem. A good alert tells you where to look, and a manual check tells you whether it is real.
What to do this week
If Reddit threads carried your ChatGPT presence, do not rush to replace them with a new channel. First, check which pages ChatGPT now cites for your top prompts. If a competitor's official page or a reference entry replaced the thread, that tells you what the engine wants: a clear, first-party answer it can trust.
Then fix the pages you control. Put the facts buyers check, such as pricing, coverage and who you serve, in plain text on pages a crawler can read. Keep community work going where your buyers actually talk, because the other engines still cite those threads and ChatGPT may change course again.
Finally, write down the date. When you report this quarter's numbers, a step change in mid-August is an engine event, not a verdict on your marketing.
