Google AI Mode now completes tasks inside partner apps. What changes for brands?

In the US, AI Mode users can now link Instacart, Canva and YouTube and finish tasks inside the answer. Being a partner and being cited are different jobs.

The short answer

From 16 July 2026, US users of Google's AI Mode can link Instacart, Canva and YouTube and complete tasks inside the answer. For most brands nothing changes yet, because only a few partners are connected. What changes is the end of the journey: some answers now finish in a partner's app, not on a cited page.

Key takeaways

  • Google's AI Mode now lets US users link Instacart, Canva and YouTube and complete tasks such as filling a grocery cart without leaving the answer.
  • Google said at I/O in May 2026 that AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users, so the surface where these tasks happen is large.
  • An integrated partner owns the action at the end of an answer; a cited page only informs the answer, and the two need different work.
  • Most brands cannot become a partner today, so the practical job is still being the source AI Mode cites when it recommends what to buy or use.

What did Google launch in AI Mode on 16 July?

Google's AI Mode can now hand a task to a connected app and finish it inside the conversation. TechCrunch reported on 16 July 2026 that US users can link Instacart, Canva and YouTube to AI Mode.1 Users can add a recipe's ingredients to an Instacart cart, ask Canva for design templates, or build and save a YouTube Music playlist.

The rollout is limited to the US for now. Google told TechCrunch it is working with a range of partners and plans to add more apps soon.1 The report did not say how partners are chosen, and it gave no figures for usage.

This note looks at one question: what a brand should do differently now that some AI answers end in an app, not on a web page. It is a reading of the launch report and of Google's own statements, not a test of the feature.

Why the size of AI Mode makes this worth watching

The surface is already large. Google said at its I/O event on 19 May 2026 that AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users, and that AI Mode queries were more than doubling quarter on quarter.2 That is a company statement, not an audited figure, and Google did not say how it counts a monthly user.

Even so, a feature that lets an answer complete a purchase or a creative task inside that surface changes the last step of many journeys. Until now, an AI Mode answer informed a choice and the user clicked out to act on it. For the linked apps, the action now happens inside the answer.

Google is also keeping more of the journey on its own pages in other ways. Profound, which sells AI visibility software, reported on 14 July 2026 that google.com's share of AI Mode citations grew 8.4 times between 15 April and 30 June 2026.3 Profound attributes the rise to Business Profile and product knowledge panel cards, mostly on local and product queries.

Partner versus cited page: two different jobs

Being an integrated partner and being a cited page are separate positions with separate work behind them. A partner owns the action at the end of the answer. A cited page shapes what the answer says, and then hopes for a click.

Two ways a brand appears in an AI Mode answer

Integrated app partner

  • Owns the task: cart, design, playlist
  • Needs a deal with Google and account linking
  • Gains the transaction, not only a mention
  • Few brands qualify today

Cited or named source

  • Shapes what the answer recommends
  • Needs clear, crawlable, consistent facts
  • Gains trust and some clicks
  • Open to any brand

For a grocery brand, the difference is concrete. Suppose an answer suggests a recipe and fills an Instacart cart. Instacart is the partner. Which branded products land in that cart depends on the retailer's catalogue and on what the answer recommends, and the brand's own site may never be visited.

Our view: for most brands the partner route is closed for now, so the practical work has not changed. Be the source AI Mode trusts when it decides what to recommend. That means product facts that match across your site, your feeds and the retailers that stock you.

What can a brand do this quarter?

Three things are within reach for most brands, and none needs a partnership.

First, check the facts AI Mode can see about you on Google-owned surfaces. If Google's own cards are a growing share of what AI Mode cites, an incomplete Business Profile or a thin product listing feeds straight into answers.

Second, make sure the retailers and marketplaces that sell your products carry the same names, specifications and prices as your own site. When an answer fills a cart in a partner's app, it can only choose from what that app lists. Our guide to why AI engines skip some products covers the feed and catalogue side of this.

Third, keep the basics of being citable in place. Pages that answer the question in the first lines, crawlable by Google, are still the way into an answer. Our review of the evidence on schema, llms.txt and community sites separates the tactics with support from those without.

What we will watch

Three signals will show whether this launch matters beyond its first partners. The first is the partner list: whether Google opens app linking to retailers and service businesses in categories beyond groceries, design and music. The second is geography, since the feature is US-only at launch.

The third is measurement. An answer that ends in a partner's app leaves no referral visit to count, so a brand's analytics will not show it. Tracking will need to look at what the answer recommended, not only at what was clicked. When we measure Google AI answers, we record the brands named and the sources cited in each answer, which is the part of the journey a brand can still see.

Our view: treat app integrations as a reason to tighten your product facts now, not as a channel to chase. When the partner programme opens wider, brands with clean, consistent data will be the easiest to connect.
