Google AI Mode now books hotels through partners. What independent hotels can do
US travellers can now compare, choose and pay for hotel rooms inside Google's AI Mode, through chains and OTAs. What independent hotels should keep current.

The short answer
From 27 August 2026, US travellers can compare rooms, check cancellation terms and pay with Google Pay inside AI Mode, booking through partner chains and online travel agencies that stay merchant of record. Independent hotels without a partner route are not in that flow, so their own rates, terms and Business Profile carry more weight.
Key takeaways
- Google's agentic hotel booking in AI Mode launched in the US on 27 August 2026, with chains and online travel agencies as the booking partners.
- The hotel or the online travel agency still charges the card, sends the confirmation and handles support; Google facilitates the transaction.
- Partners receive only the minimum guest data needed for the booking, not the conversation that led to it.
- In Profound's data for 15 April to 30 June 2026, google.com's citation share in AI Mode grew 8.4 times, driven by Business Profile and product cards.
- For an independent hotel, a complete Business Profile and plain-text rates and cancellation terms on its own site are the first things to fix.

What launched on 27 August
Google's AI Mode can now take a US traveller from a hotel question to a paid booking without leaving the chat. According to Skift's report of the launch, travellers can find and compare rooms, review cancellation terms and pay with Google Pay inside AI Mode, starting in the US only.1
The booking runs through partners. Skift names Booking.com, Choice Hotels, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG, Marriott, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham.1 The hotel or the online travel agency still charges the card, sends the confirmation and offers support, so Google is not the merchant of record. The traveller approves the room and the payment; the agent does not book on its own.
This is the next step after Google's earlier work on task completion, such as AI Mode finishing tasks inside partner apps. In May, Google said AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users a year after launch, by its own count.2 A booking flow inside a product of that size changes where the decision happens, even before it reaches other countries.
Who is in the booking flow, and who is not?
The launch partners are large chains and large online travel agencies. Skift's report does not mention independent hotels, and nothing in it suggests a direct route for a property without a chain or agency connection.1
That leaves an independent hotel with three positions in an AI Mode booking. It can be bookable through an agency that is a partner, paying that agency's commission. It can appear in the answer but send the traveller off to its own site. Or it can be missing from the answer entirely.
Our view: for most independents, the second position is worth defending hardest. Agency listings will carry you into the booking flow anyway. What you control is whether the answer describes your property correctly and gives the traveller a reason to click through to book direct.
There is a data cost for partners too. Skift reports that Google shares only the minimum needed for the booking, such as name, payment, occupancy and property, and not the wider chat context.1 Even a chain that takes the booking learns little about why the guest chose it.
Why the Business Profile matters more now
Google's own pages already sit between travellers and hotel websites in AI Mode. In Profound's data for 15 April to 30 June 2026, google.com's citation share in AI Mode grew 8.4 times, making it the second most-cited domain.3 Profound attributes the growth to Business Profile and product knowledge panel cards. In its analysis of more than 32 million Business Profile citations, hospitality and travel came first among the industries most affected.
So when AI Mode answers "quiet boutique hotel near the old town with free cancellation", the card it cites for you may be your Business Profile, not your website. If that card has old photos, a wrong category or unanswered reviews, the answer inherits them.
Our source map for AI Mode by query type shows how local and transactional queries lean on Google-hosted cards. Hotel queries sit firmly in that group.
Where an independent hotel can still win the booking
- Traveller asks AI Mode
- Answer cites Business Profile and site
- Partner booking in the chat
- Click through to book direct
What to keep current
Keep current the facts an agent needs to compare you with a partner property. An AI answer can only weigh what it can read, and a booking flow compares rooms on price, terms and fit.
- Rates in plain text. A "from" price per room type on your site, updated when it changes, so answers do not quote last season.
- Cancellation terms. Written on the room or policy page in one clear paragraph, matching what your booking engine enforces.
- Business Profile. Correct category, current photos, amenities, check-in times, and replies to recent reviews.
- Room facts. Beds, occupancy, accessibility and what is included, as text rather than inside images.
- Agency listings. The same facts on every agency listing, so the partner route and your direct route agree.
Our checklist for making a travel site machine-readable covers the technical side, from crawler access to rate pages. Our view: the cancellation paragraph is the most neglected item on that list, and the one a booking agent is now built to read.
Outside the US: prepare, don't wait
The booking flow is US-only for now, but the parts that feed it are not. Google said in October 2025 that AI Mode was available in more than 200 countries and territories, and Business Profiles are not a US-only product.4
Independent hotels elsewhere can treat this launch as a preview. Fix the profile, publish terms and rates as text, and check how AI Mode answers your three most valuable traveller questions today. When booking arrives in your market, you will already be described correctly, and that is the part partners cannot sell you.
Track one more thing from now on: how often an AI answer names you without a link to your own site. That share tells you how much of your visibility already depends on cards and partners rather than on pages you own.
